Frequently Asked Questions
Natural Paving pavers effectively prevent weed growth, ensuring that even during heavy rainfall, water can permeate evenly. This is made possible by the robust nonwoven geotextile attached to the base of the pavers. If a seed happens to land on a paver, it won’t establish roots, as no water is retained beneath the pebbles, and the geotextile inhibits root penetration.
Certainly. The use of irregularly shaped pebbles or stone chips allows for the installation of pavers on a slightly steeper slope compared to when using regular-shaped pebbles.
The steepest slope allowable is 1 in 6 or 9.5 degrees.
For detailed information, including maximum recommended slopes and other parameters, refer to the datasheets.
Natural Paving pavers can be laid over cracked concrete surfaces, depending on the specific circumstances. Common reasons for concrete cracking include:
- New concrete slabs shrinking without proper crack starters.
- Inadequate foundation strength for the load.
- Foundation design issues, such as poor wet strength or lack of a geotextile between soil and subbase.
For situations 1 and 2, appropriate design for water drainage may allow Natural Paving to be laid over cracked concrete. In case 3, the concrete must be removed, and underlying issues addressed to establish a suitable base for Natural Paving. Natural Paving offers practicality comparable to hard paved surfaces, effectively accommodating narrow wheels, high heels, walking sticks, and vehicular traffic. It addresses conventional drawbacks associated with pebble use by securely locking them in place, transforming the pavers into a stable, safe, and level surface.
In contrast, concrete is prone to cracking under stress or excessive load. Additionally, its impermeability can lead to surface puddling, posing potential hazards.
Natural Paving is compatible with river pebbles, decorative stones, or gravel chips ranging in size from 8mm to 14mm. All pebbles and decorative stones should be thoroughly washed, free of dust, and possess a sturdy composition. For sloped surfaces, we recommend using irregularly shaped pebbles or stone chips, as this aids in securing them in place.
Using pebbles larger than the recommended size may prevent proper packing into the paver, potentially leading to an unstable surface. Conversely, pebbles that are too small are prone to movement within the honeycomb cells.
It is crucial to use the correct size pebbles to optimise the performance of Natural Paving.

Natural Paving is extremely stable, ensuring a seamless surface without cracks or puddles. It adeptly handles ground movement and tree roots.
Natural Paving demands minimal maintenance. Leaves and debris can be easily removed with a light rake or sweep. In shaded areas, a moss and mildew spray may be needed for the pebbles, and any settling of stones or the foundation can be addressed by gently raking or sweeping.
Since Natural Paving is permeable, rain and surface water can directly pass through the geotextile attached beneath the paver, evenly soaking into the ground below. In instances of heavy rainfall, excess water efficiently drains away when the installation includes proper drainage measures.
It is not recommended to use crushed shell fill with Natural Paving. Crushed shell has a weak structure, and with continuous traffic use, it can easily turn into powder, compacting and leaving the top of the honeycomb structure exposed. Additionally, it can be washed away during strong winds or heavy rain.
On the contrary, when using the recommended 8mm to 14mm pebbles, the stones that overlay the grid are stabilised within the gaps between the pebbles below. These pebbles are held in place by the Natural Paving grid, creating a stable pathway. The resulting surface is both natural-looking and stable enough for various uses. With crushed shell, you lose the stabilising influence of the ‘nests’ once the shells disintegrate and compact into the grid.
If the color of shells is desired, alternatives like white quartz pebbles or lime chips (color similar to shells) can be considered. While white quartz pebbles are smooth and pleasant to walk on, they can be expensive. Lime chips are more economical but may not be as comfortable for barefoot walking.
Yes, Natural Paving pavers can be easily cut into any desired shape using a handsaw or circular saw. Alternatively, tin snips or a knife can also be effective tools for cutting. Ensure that all safety regulations are followed when performing any cutting tasks.
